William Robb was first introduced to the trimmings business on what you’d describe, as a day of typical Scottish weather – wet and miserable!
While sheltering from the rain, on his way to a job interview, he got chatting with a passer-by who invited him to a nearby premises instead, and much to his surprise, soon found himself employed by the Glasgow firm of Manufacturers’ Agents, A. Mackenzie & Co.
After a period of apprenticeship, and at just seventeen, William was on the “Road”, representing manufacturers of buttons and trimmings worldwide, as well as establishing connections of his own.
With the experience and knowledge of supply sources gained from his early years in the trade, William established his own company in 1924.
In 1934 William’s brother Arthur joined the business and in the early 1940’s it was formed into a limited company and became William & A.M. Robb Limited.
Scotland’s oldest trimming merchant is still owned and run by members of the William Robb family, from offices and warehousing overlooking the River Clyde.
